City to Feature Two Exhibits for Women’s History Month

The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is hosting two art exhibits in celebration of Women’s History Month. Fired and Inspired: The Art of Ceramics is an exhibit featuring both functional and sculptural pottery. Hand- built and wheel -thrown objects and works with a large variety of clay types, glazes, processes and firing techniques will be on display from artists Carren Clarke-McAdoo, Kathryn Reid, and Leslie Messersmith in the Spotlight Gallery at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center located at 4901 Old Brooks Road.

The second exhibit is Vivid Colors in Acrylics: Paintings by Faithe Norrell. Norrell is a self-taught artist known for her use of vibrant colors. Her most recent works to be featured include cityscapes, floral still lifes and abstracts. These paintings will also be on display at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center on the Community Art Wall.

The exhibits opened on Friday, March 7, 2014 and will run through Friday, April 18, 2014 with hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.  A reception and gallery talk is to be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 6 – 8p.m.

Department of Parks and Recreation Announces Closings Due to Inclement Weather

Due to the expected inclement weather, the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities will be closing all facilities on Tuesday January 21, 2014 at 7 p.m.  Recreation centers will be open on Wednesday January 22, 2014 from noon until 5 p.m.

Richmond, VA – In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, city government offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2014. City offices will reopen at regular business hours on Tuesday, January 21.

Monday’s closing includes all branches of the Richmond Public Libraries and all city community centers, both of which will reopen on Tuesday.

Refuse collection will not be performed on Monday as the city’s Solid Waste Management Division will also be closed. This closure will result in a one day delay of refuse collection for the remainder of the week, as the collection schedule will begin on Tuesday and continue through Friday.

The East Richmond Road Convenience Center and Hopkins Road Transfer Stations are also closed on Monday, January 20. Each facility will resume its normal schedule on Tuesday.

Introducing WebTrac Online Registration System

WebTrac is the online registration system now utilized by the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities (PRCF).  From the comfort of their own home, PRCF patrons can register for any of our classes, submit a request for a facility rental, or find out information about the latest Active Adult trips.

City of Richmond Announces Holiday Schedule

City government offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Monday, December 23, Tuesday, December 24, and Wednesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday. City offices will reopen at regular business hours on Thursday, December 26, 2013. This closing includes all branches of the Richmond Public Libraries, which will open on their normal schedule Saturday, December 21, but are closed December 23 – 25.

The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will open the following locations from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 26 through Friday, January 3, 2014, with the exception of Sunday, December 29, Wednesday, January 1, and Sunday, January 5.

Randolph Community Center Presents: "Bak n da Day" Concert Cafe

Join the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities as we continue celebrating the holiday season with local singing group "Bak n da Day."  

Celebrate the Holiday Season!

Carols at Noon is a free holiday concert series in partnership with Richmond Public Schools.  Featuring school choirs from across the city, each concert is expected to last approximately 20 minutes.

Public Input Wanted on Campus Plan for Pine Camp

The department will hold a second public meeting to receive suggestions, ideas and comments for the development of a campus plan for its Pine Camp Arts and Community Center property on Wednesday February 9 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Pine Camp Arts and Community Center, which is located at 4901 Old Brook Road.
Over the years, the department has received various suggestions and ideas for the improvement and use of this city parks and recreation property that currently contains a community center, playground, walking trail, and basketball courts. The property also serves as the site of the city’s cultural arts center.
The purpose of this meeting is to engage the public in dialogue regarding any future improvements to the property that could occur based on the desires of city residents and visitors.

Volunteers Needed to Help 'Tree the Track'

Do you enjoy Byrd Park? Have you ever used the Byrd Park vita course? Are you looking for a way to help make our city a better place to live? Then join the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and the Friends of Byrd Park on Saturday, January 22, from 9 a.m. to noon, in a Neighbor-to-Neighbor project that will help beautify the park.
Volunteers are needed to help plant 30 new trees around the Byrd Park vita course. The holes will be dug in advance, and volunteers are needed to mulch, water and shovel dirt around the new plantings. This project is a great activity for families to enjoy together, and all ages can help.
Neighbor-to-Neighbor is an initiative of Mayor Dwight C. Jones to encourage the residents of Richmond to get involved and become active architects in “Building a Better Richmond.”

Day of Service Project Scheduled in Bryan Park

Please join the Friends of Bryan Park and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities in celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and the National Day of Service by volunteering for a Bryan Park environmental cleanup project. The work will take place on January 17 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in Bryan Park. This ’Day On, Not A Day Off’ project is endorsed by Mayor Dwight C. Jones’ Neighbor-to-Neighbor initiative, which encourages Richmond residents to get involved to help “Build a Better Richmond.”
Volunteers are needed to help cleanup the park’s floodplains and remove trash and debris from areas along the park’s creek beds and lake. This is an opportunity to give something back to the city, as well as to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and would be a great activity for individuals, service groups or teens.
All volunteers should wear heavy shoes or work boots, bring their own work gloves if possible, and meet at the park’s Shelter #1 at 9:30 a.m. to receive trash bags, assignments and instructions.
Bryan Park is located at 4308 Hermitage Road. The entrance to the park is just north of the I-95 entrance ramp. Park signs will provide directions to Shelter #1.

Youth Football Championship Games set for Nov. 13 at City Stadium

The department will hold its youth football championship games on Saturday, Nov. 13 at City Stadium, previously known as the University of Richmond Stadium, which is located at 601 McCloy St. Three games with players ranging in age from 8-years-old to 15-years-old will be played starting at 10 a.m. to determine the junior, midget and peewee championship teams.
The teams represent the department’s community centers located throughout the city. Approximately 1,720 children in the city play football through the department’s athletic programs at city community centers. They are led by department staff and largely supported by volunteer coaches and parents.
The games this year will include a halftime program featuring the Huguenot High School Marching Band.
Come out and support the city’s youth and get a glimpse of the football players of tomorrow. Tickets can be purchased at the gate and are $2 for children age 11 and younger and $4 for adults and children age 12 and older.
