Parks and Recreation Update: Open Streets concept to remain at Byrd and Chimborazo Parks

Parks and Recreation Update

Open Streets concept to remain at Byrd and Chimborazo Parks

Richmond, VA – The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) continues to take the safety and health of our park visitors as a top priority. As the City of Richmond continues to fight the spread of this virus, PRCF will maintain social distancing measures that were previously put into place.

PRCF plans to continue the closure of Chimborazo Park, 3215 E. Broad Street, to vehicular traffic to assist in social distancing and protect visitors to the area. As the number of visitors utilizing the park for passive recreation increases, administration has opted to maintain the gate closures to allow all visitors the opportunity to enjoy the park safely.

Vehicular traffic will also continue to be limited in Byrd Park on Strollers Lane, Westover Road, and Trafford Road on the weekends only. Prior to the coronavirus epidemic, traffic gates were closed on Sundays to allow for visitors to walk and bike in the area. In April, administration opted to include Saturday as well to allow for social distancing while visiting the park.

The city understands the importance of the park system to our residents and will re-evaluate the need for closures and cancellations as this unprecedented situation evolves.
