City Summer Meals Program Begins on July 6

Richmond, VA – The Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) will begin serving healthy meals to youth this summer on Monday, July 6 as part of the Summer Food Service Program. The summer food program provides children and teens, through age 18, with nutritious breakfast and lunch, until Friday, August 21, 2020.

Healthy meals are provided based on USDA nutrition guidelines. No registration is required. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Meals will be provided, on a first come, first serve basis, at the sites and times as follows:

2020 Summer Fun Pop Up Camp Locations

Kids Can Eat Free All Summer

Anyone 18 and younger can eat for free this summer under the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ Summer Meals for Kids program. The free meals are available by merely walking in at meal time to any of the 120 sites throughout the City and surrounding counties that participate in the department’s program. No registration is required.

      “With this program, there is no reason for any young person to be hungry this summer,” said Dr. Norman C. Merrifield, director of the department.

      The Summer Meals for Kids program is made possible through the department’s partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During the summer of 2012, the department served approximately 268,000 free meals through the program.

      Most of the department’s community centers are participating in the program Monday through Friday and are serving breakfast from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The program will continue at community centers until Aug. 23, but other locations may choose to serve the meals through Aug. 30. Organizations Wanted to Give Away Free Summer Meals

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is looking for organizations to help provide free meals for children during the summer. Any group, organization or church that offers summer programs for youth age 17 or younger can participate in the department's Summer Meals for Kids program and receive free meals for the children in their program for any length of time between June 17 and August 30, however the deadline to apply is March 22.

      An informational session for anyone interested in joining the program will be held Wednesday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Byrd Park Round House. The Round House is located near the intersection of Lakeview and South Davis avenues in Byrd Park. No registration or commitment is required to attend the informational session, and representatives of interested organizations are encouraged to attend to have any questions they may have answered.
