Help Send Richmond's Children to Summer Camp!

On Thursday, May 4, residents of Central Virginia can help send a child from the City of Richmond to summer camp, as well as hear some of your favorite music by donating to the City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities 10th annual Send a Kid to Camp radiothon.


Through the City’s partnership with the Enrichmond Foundation and Radio One, residents can call (804) 521-8400 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, to donate. For a donation of $25 or more, the caller can have their favorite song played on KISS 99.3/105.7 FM or iPower 92.1/104.1 FM. Donations can also be accepted anytime online at www.enrichmond.org/send-a-kid-to-camp.

All donations are tax deductible and will help pay for city children to attend any of the summer camps hosted by the City department.

This year’s Great Summer Escape camp theme of “The Secrets of the Mystery Box” will bring campers an exciting and educational summer experience that will feature activities such as swim lessons, participation in the STEM summer program in partnership with the 4H Virginia Cooperative Extension, and how music has influenced our culture.

“These funds help us reach children in the city who often have few constructive options for summer activities,” said Deborah E. Morton, interim director for Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities. “By making a donation during the Send a Kid to Camp radiothon, you are helping with the City’s efforts to shape the future of our children.”

The Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities summer camp programs offer nine weeks of structured activities for children ages 6 to 12, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The summer camp session begins on June 26 and ends on August 25. For city residents, the cost to send one child to the Great Summer Escape camp is $250; however, the donations from the radiothon are used to provide scholarships for those who need them.

All donations are tax deductible and will help pay for city children to attend one of the 12 summer camps across the city.

Help Send a City Kid to Summer Camp

The department will hold its annual radiothon fundraiser on Thursday, May 9, to help pay for city children to attend summer camp.

     “This is a great opportunity for area residents to have a real positive impact on our community’s youth and their development,” said Dr. Norman C. Merrifield, PRCF director. "By helping us provide the summer camp experience for Richmond’s children, you are providing them with positive, educational leisure this summer that will expose them to new experiences and fun.”

      The radiothon, held in conjunction with Radio One and the Enrichmond Foundation, will kick off at 10 a.m. on 92.1FM iPOWER, 99.3FM and 105.7FM KISS, and 104.7FM PRAISE. Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones will be on the air to lead off the radiothon and encourage listeners to donate to help the department reach its goal of raising $25,000 in funding to enable children without financial resources attend summer camp. The public is encouraged to tune in to one of the Radio One stations and call 804-521-8400 to make a donation.

     Callers who make a donation of $25 or more can also have their musical request played on either iPower or KISS as well as have their name or organization mentioned on the air. In addition, everyone who donates $250 or more will be entered into a drawing to receive two tickets to the 9^th Annual Stone Soul Music and Food Festival, which will be held on Saturday, June 1 at Richmond International Raceway.

City to hold annual Send-a-Kid-to-Camp Radiothon

On Thursday, May 10, the department will hold its annual Send-a-Kid-to-Camp Radiothon in partnership with Miss Community Clovia, Radio One’s 99.3/105.7 KISS FM, I POWER 92.1 FM and Praise 104.7 FM, and Enrichmond, the department’s non-profit foundation.

     During the radiothon, the public is asked to call (804) 521-8400 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to make a donation of any amount which will be used to help send a Richmond child in need of financial assistance to summer camp. In return, anyone who donates $20 or more can have their request played on 99.3/105.7 KISS or I POWER 92.1.  

     In addition, anyone who donates $225 or more, the full cost of sending one child to camp, will receive two tickets to the Stone Soul Music and Food Festival on Saturday, June 2, on Brown’s Island.

     “What’s most important is that donors will know they have helped make a difference in the life of a child this summer,” said Dr. Norman C. Merrifield, Ed. D, director of the city department. “These funds take children off the streets and provide them with structured activities during the summer months. The mentoring and experiences these children receive in our summer camps can help shape their future and have an impact on the future of the city as well,” he said.

     Donations of any amount are acceptable and can be made with a check, a credit card or online at www.enrichmond.org. In addition, all donations are tax deductible.

     The department’s summer camp program offers nine-weeks of activities for children ages 6 – 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning June 25. The camps are held at the department’s community centers, which are located throughout the city, and include activities featuring art and cultural enrichment, health and physical education, science and environmental education, and personal and social development. A free breakfast and lunch is provided for all campers through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Summer Meals for Kids Program.
