BATTERY PARK VIKINGS ARE CITY’S FIRST TO COMPETE IN THE SNOOP YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE NATIONALS

The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities (PRCF) is pleased to announce the Battery Park Community Center Vikings are competing in the Snoop Youth Football League Nationals held December 14 through 16 in Los Angeles, California. Mayor Stoney will join the team in support as part of the city’s partnership with the Michael Robinson Excel 2 Excellence (E2E) Program, which was announced in May of this year.

Battery Park Vikings and Powhatan Chiefs

The Vikings won the 14U championship on November 17, defeating the Powhatan Chiefs 26 - 0 and securing their place as the city’s first recreation team to appear in the popular west coast competition. The Randolph Community Center Dragons 14U Cheerleaders who won the inaugural E2E cheerleading competition held in October will also be accompanying the team.

“These young men and women worked extremely hard this season for the opportunity to represent the City of Richmond on a national stage,” said Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney. “I’m grateful for the partnership with Michael Robinson and E2E which has allowed the undeniable talent of our kids to shine. I am excited to see them play in Los Angeles this weekend and know they will make our city proud.”

“This season has surpassed our expectations,” said Chris Frelke, director of the city's Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. “And this is just the beginning of the success we will see from these young men and women — on and off the field.”   

“We have to put the city and the East Coast on our backs,” said Vikings captain Nasir Eberhardt. “Losing is not in my vocabulary,” Eberhardt added. “I expect to go out there to California and win.”

James River Anticipated to Reach Moderate Flood Stage

The City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) continues to monitor the James River as it is expected to reach a moderate flood stage of 15 feet by Wednesday, September 19. With the current river levels at 13.7 feet, the James River is currently closed to all users, with access to Belle Isle being restricted in the next few hours. The official flood stage level is at 12 feet.

The James River Park System (JRPS) has protocols that have been put into place to ensure the safety of all park users and have been activated with the recent rains from the remints of Hurricane Florence.

-       Projected at 5 feet – All river users need to use a life jacket if engaging in any activities on the river.

-       Projected at 8 feet – Trash and recycling cans are removed from the riverfront. The Pipeline Trail is closed to all users.

-       Above 9 feet – The river is closed to all users.

-       Projected at 14 feet – Access to Belle Isle along the North Side at Hollywood Rapid is restricted to all users.

-       Projected to top 20 feet – Riverfront locations and the T. Tyler Potterfield Bridge are closed to all users.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the river levels from the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service website.

Come Celebrate African Culture and Diversity at the 2018 AfroFest RVA

     Come celebrate the culture and diversity of the African immigrant population at the 2018 AfroFest RVA, on Saturday, August 11, from noon to 5 p.m. at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center, 4901 Old Brook Road. This free festival is proudly presented by the city of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) and the African Community Network.
     AfroFest RVA is a celebration of African nations and the diversity of the African culture. The goal of the festival is to promote deeper multicultural understanding and connections within the RVA community.
     Festival attendees will learn more about African countries while enjoying cultural performances, drumming by Okyerema Asante and music by DJ Fidel, a fashion show of African apparel, children’s activities, food and much more. Vendors will have African clothes, art and other various merchandise available for purchase.
     A highlight of the festival is the championship soccer match between Cameroon and Ghana at noon on August 11 on the Pine Camp athletic field. The championship match concludes the round robin tournament of six African nations.

PRCF Presents "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"

     The city of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) proudly presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” at Dogwood Dell. Opening night is Friday, July 27 with additional performances scheduled for Saturday, July 28; Sunday, July 29; Friday, August 3; and Saturday, August 4. All performances begin at 8:30 p.m.
     “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a musical comedy based on the book by Rachel Sheinken and includes an engaging musical score by William Finn. The musical details an eclectic group of sixth graders who are eager to win the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee for a variety of different reasons.
     Joseph Pabst will direct PRCF’s production along with musical director Ben Miller and choreographer Kate Belleman.
     PRCF’s presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” as part of the 62nd Festival of heARTS, a summer long concert and event series. Guests are advised to arrive early to secure seats in the outdoor amphitheater. Picnics are encouraged; however, pets, alcohol or glass containers are not allowed. City Expands Operating Hours of Five City Community Centers

     Mayor Levar M. Stoney is pleased to announce that the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities (PRCF) has expanded the operating hours of five city community centers.
     The expanded operating hours for the five community centers are from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. This change in operational hours began on July 14. City community centers had been closed on weekends unless they were being used for special events. The five community centers affected by this change are:

• Bellemeade Community Center, 1800 Lynhaven Avenue
• Hotchkiss Community Center, 701 Brookland Park Boulevard
• Powhatan Community Center, 5051 Northampton Street
• Randolph Community Center, 1415 Grayland Avenue
• Southside Community Center, 6255 Old Warwick Road

     As a result of this operational change, the indoor pool at Bellemeade Community Center is open to the public on Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
“Expanding the operating hours of city community centers will increase recreational and leisure activity within the community and support after school activities for youth,” said Mayor Stoney. “Giving kids and adults more opportunity and access to activities and support services that enrich their minds and improve their bodies is time and money well spent by the City of Richmond.”
     With the weekend openings, the community will have access to a variety of athletic activities, to include basketball, volleyball, pickle ball, and fitness training. Other activities such as cultural arts, STEAM (fashion and design, wood working, digital photography etc.), multi-cultural programming and many other programming opportunities also become available to the community. PRCF will monitor facility usage and resident program request to adjust community center hours and programming as needed.
     The Calhoun Community Center, 436 Calhoun Street, will open on weekends in the next few weeks, to bring the total number of city community centers with expanded hours to six. These six sites serve as a pilot for potentially expanding operational hours at additional city community centers in the future. Funding for this operational change was included in the city’s FY2019 budget, as presented by Mayor Stoney.

City and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site to Celebrate 154th Anniversary of Maggie L. Walker's Birthday

     On Saturday, July 14, the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and the city of Richmond invite the public to celebrate the life and legacy of Maggie L. Walker and the Jackson Ward community in which she lived. In honor of the 154th anniversary of Mrs. Walker’s birthday, public events will be held at the historic site and in the area of the Maggie Walker statue. These events will feature a variety of activities to include a community engagement fair, open-house tours, special program, children’s activities, entertainment and refreshments.
The national historic site will host a special event on July 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festivities begin at 11 a.m. with the site’s Common Good Fair, which features children’s activities and community engagement groups highlighting ways individuals can take action and make a difference in the community. A recognition ceremony honoring the Maggie L. Walker Summer Youth Leadership Institute Class of 2018 will be held at 11:30 a.m., followed by light refreshments and music. Open-house tours of the Maggie Walker home will be available before and after the ceremony. The event is free and open to the public.
     The city of Richmond’s celebration event is from noon to 4 p.m. at the intersection of Broad Street and North Adams Street, site of the Maggie Walker statue. This event features remarks from public officials, Maggie Walker’s family and Maggie Walker school alumni at 1 p.m., entertainment by Glennroy Bailey, youth boxing exhibition, inflatables, refreshments and much more.
     Event speakers include Faith Elizabeth Walker Mickens, Maggie Walker’s great-great granddaughter; Mayor Levar Stoney; David Ruth, superintendent National Park Service Maggie Walker Historic Site; Shirley Gault, president National Maggie L. Walker Alumni Association; and Melvin Jones, Maggie Walker High School alumni and project advocate.
     Event speakers include Faith Elizabeth Walker Mickens, Maggie Walker’s great-great granddaughter; Mayor Levar Stoney; David Ruth, superintendent National Park Service Maggie Walker Historic Site; Shirley Gault, president National Maggie L.      Both of the July 14 events are free to the public. A shuttle bus will be available for transportation between each event location.
     The first African American woman to charter a bank and serve as its president, Mrs. Walker dedicated herself to a life of civic engagement, challenging racial discrimination and gender bias. Her story of leadership and self-determination continues to resonate with and inspire people around the world.

Fourth of July Celebration at Dogwood Dell

Pack a picnic, grab a blanket and bring the entire family to the Fourth of July Celebration at Dogwood Dell in Byrd Park. This annual event is part of the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities’ 62nd Festival of heARTS, a summer-long series of free outdoor family entertainment. Dogwood Dell, 1301 Blanton Avenue, is located within Byrd Park.

The Fourth of July Celebration begins at 4 p.m. with face painting and balloon art by Uncle Curt, a moon bounce, and games at the entrance to Dogwood Dell. The Byrd Park Fountain Lake paddleboats will be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 4.

At 5:15 p.m., the Ephesus Drumline will march from Maymont to Dogwood Dell for a brief performance. At 5:45 p.m., the Richmond Concert Band jazz group will play several selections, followed by the reading of excerpts from the Declaration of Independence. The Richmond Concert Band will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. to perform a program of pop, patriotic music, and highlight the evening with the playing of the “1812 Overture,” which concludes with the annual fireworks display.

Guests should arrive early to secure seats in the outdoor amphitheater, Byrd Park and the surrounding area. Event parking will be available at City Stadium, 3201 Maplewood Avenue, with free shuttle bus service beginning at 4 p.m. Individuals with valid handicapped parking stickers will be allowed to park in the Dell parking lot to the east of the Carillon. Carillon neighborhood streets will be closed to traffic and parking. The Boulevard Bridge will close at approximately 7 p.m. and remain closed until the fireworks display has concluded.

Vendors will have food and drinks for sell throughout the evening. Guest are encouraged to bring picnics, but no glass containers or alcohol are allowed in the park. Dogs are not allowed in the park, and the adjacent Barker Park Dog Park will be closed July 3, July 4 and July 5 for safety purposes.

2018 Movies In The Park

The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities proudly presents Movies in the Park. This annual series of free movies will be held every Friday night, from June 22 through August 16, in a different city park.

Activities begin at 8 p.m. and the movies start at 8:30 p.m., or as soon as it is dark. Families are invited to bring blankets or chairs and refreshments. Vendors will also have refreshments for sale.

City Summer Meals Program Begins on June 18

The Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will begin serving healthy meals to youth this summer on June 18. The summer food program provides children and teens, through age 18, with nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinners, from June 18 through August 24.

Healthy meals are provided based on USDA nutrition guidelines. No registration is required. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
